hey guys, new to the forum so take it easy on me. I inherited a 1966 gmc pickup but it has a 302 engine in it with matching transmission. I was told it came out of 1969 z28 camaro. The raised number on the back is 3970010. I’ve checked many places such as jasper engines and gone through a lot of websites to determine where the engine came from. Just wondering if you guys could help find out?

Looked up the casting number and what you were told is what it is. Or so the number says lol.

    3970010 Small Block V8 1969 302, 4 bolt, Camaro Z28

However, I just found a site saying that casting number could also be used on a 350 2 or 4 bolt block as well. Can you get to the stamp in front of the head? Or has the engine been decked?

Alright, lets see what I can make of this. The first set of numbers is unique to the car, the second set of numbers is block information.
    1 - Chevy
    3 - 1973 (I think)
J - Janesville (pretty sure this is Wisconsin)
247181 - Last 6 of the cars VIN

F - Flint (pretty sure this is Flint Michigan)
    03 - Month made
    26 - day made
CKL - This is the engine suffix code. CKL can be one of two engines, but because of the 3 in the vin, we know it is only one of the two CKL's. We know this block is from a 1973 F, A or B body car, it had a Turbo Hydromatic transmission and the Calif I'm thinking means it was build for California but not sure on that. It just states "Application" in that column. And this engine is a 350ci

So sadly it is not from 1969, it is not a 302 and is not worth what I originally thought with the casting number on the side of the block.

Thank you so much. I was perplexed because the oil filler is on the front which makes me think it is a 327. Runs great. But now i will rethink what i will do.
