He couldn't possibly be more right. Any degree or experience that you have will just get your foot in the door, but if you are semi-competent in the job you need to perform and you have great people skills, you will get very far

I work in the fabrications/repair shop for a large environmental construction company. We repair alot of equipment and new job fabrication/installs. I dont have one specific job task, I pretty much do a ton of different things. for example here is a break down of what I did today.

    • Fit up a large Stainless Steel feed hopper so the welder could weld it out.
    • Helped my boss design/layout some side hill screen stands
    • Did material take-off for another task, then ordered all the materials thru our purchasing department via email.
    • Drove into town and picked up a few things.
    • spent about 1 hr cutting some of the grass in the field behind the shop (10 acres)with a bush-hog.
    • Went out to Dow Chemical (one of our jobsites) and changed a gearbox on a pugmil.

Pay is decent, with the opportunity to work OT.

Great benefits ( insurance, life, dental, health, disability, etc...)
Company truck & fuel card ;)
I work less than 1/2 mile from my house:thumbsup:
I get paid by the hour but dont have to punch a time clock. My boss is really cool and very flexible as long as we get our task done.

hate this job, the 2nd in command and the other detailer are trying to get me to quit so they dont have to fire me... long story, not worth getting into.

I have my hands in many things but my trade is a Union Electrician
Pay depends on where you are at because scales and benefit packages differ from state to stae and region to region. Low scale would be considered anything under 25/hr on the check with a total package being around 40/hr. I have brought home a check over 7k for one week, plus 90 days later got another check for 1500 for vacation fund, and then I put a pile of money into my retirements. We get three forms of retirement via two pensions and an annuity. Health care is free with a small co-pay. To get your foot in the door you have to serve a five year apprenticeship, then attend class a few times a week while training OJT. It is a very rewarding and lucrative career and if you are interested I can get you the information you need to join ASAP. PM me for details.
